Born in Columbus, Ohio, and raised in Los Angeles, California, Tia was born into a musical family. Her father, Mel Stewart got his start in the business at Whitfield Records. While her father was recording, Tia would often hang out with legendary producer and writer, Norman Whitfield. Credited with penning some of the most memorable songs for Motown including hits for The Temptations and Rolls Royce – Whitfield took Tia under his wing. Smitten by the music bug, Tia moved back to Columbus and launched her singing career at church.
At the age of 13, Tia became a regular in talent shows throughout Ohio. In one talent show, she caught the eye of the judges in the wildly popular television series, Star Search. A year later, Tia joined Warner Brothers/Malaco Recording group – Team Dream. The group went on to record an album, “Games”. Team Dream recorded a single, “Everybody is Somebody” – which was featured in the movie hit, “Lean on me,” featuring Academy Award nominated actor Morgan Freeman.
A few years later, Tia joined Brick City Records Artist, Devine. This became the catalyst for launching her solo career. Tia opened up for legendary R&B acts such as Roger Troutman and Zapp, Morris Day of the Time, Cameo and New Birth.
At the age of 25, Tia was selected to sing background for Atlantic Records legendary recording artist, Gerald Levert. During this time, Tia was given the opportunity to share the stage was artists such as Stevie Wonder, Patti LaBelle, The O’Jays, Luther Vandross, Frankie Beverly and Maze, The Whispers, New Edition, Babyface, Brian McKnight, Charlie Wilson and many others. In addition, she shared the stage with comedians Bernie Mac, Monique, Cedric the Entertainer and Mike Epps.
Throughout her career, Tia has been fortunate to travel all over the world. One of her most memorable experiences was in 2006. While performing on the Father & Son tour with Eddie and Gerald Levert in South Africa, she was able to meet Nelson and Winnie Mandela. In addition, Tia has performed on the Tom Joyner Fantastic Voyage on numerous occasions.
For the past 10 years, Tia has performed with one of Columbus’s local favorite bands – Conspiracy. Currently, Tia is back in the studio working on new material and has aspirations of recording a solo project in the near future.
